East Bengal drub Mohammedan Club 5-0 in Sahara league opener
Former champions East Bengal opened their campaign in the Sahara Kolkata Premier Division Soccer League in commanding style, drubbing Mohammedan Athletic Club 5-0 with medio Bikash Narzary scoring the first hat-trick of the season at their home ground here today. Two other goals for the winners were scored by Budhiram Tudu and Penn Orji. British coach Trevor James Morgan, who was with Hul City earlier and took charge of the red and yellow brigade this season after the club put up a poor show last season, passed with honours marks as his boys displayed good team work and fine marksmanship. Mohammedan A C, another outfit of former soccer giant Mohamedan Sporting, playing at the premier league dished out a lack lustre display and were outplayed by far superior rivals in all the departments of the game. Mohammedan A C who could earn only a lone point out of the three matches they played erarlier, failed to produce hardly any goal-bound move worth mentioning. On the other hand, Nigerian striker Penn Orji scheming most of the attacks comined well with medio Vasum and defender Naoba Singh. They were ably supported by stopper Uga Opara who also defended well to keep the East Bengal fort intact
Bagan aim for the right start
Mohun Bagan coach Stanley Rozario will be hoping that his boys make a right start against a low-on-confidence Tollygunge Agragami side in their opening encounter of the CFL Premier division on Wednesday. Star striker Edeh Chidi, who is yet to recuperate from viral fever, is unlikely to feature in the starting XI.
“It’s always good if you start off with a convincing win,” the coach told the reporters after the training session on the eve of the match.
However, Australian defender Okonwo Diamondstar will make his debut in green and maroon jersey. He will have Kingshuk Debnath, Rahul Kumar and Radhakrishnan Dhanarajan for company.
Although they will facing a weak team like Tollygunge but it would be interesting to see how the new-look defence perform. While Rahul had earlier played for Bagan, it will be first for Kingshuk and Dhanarajan, both of whom had played a couple of seasons for Chirag United.
Bagan’s man for all seasons Jose Ramirez Barreto and sharpshooter Subair Murithala Ali, will be starting upfront with veteran Ashim Biswas operating from the deep. The midfeld will have young Surabuddin Mullick, captain Ishfaq Ahmed, Jayanta Sen.
While Ishfaq will operate from wide left, Jayanta will play in the central midfield. He will be the key man as far as feeding the men upfront is concerned.
The Tollygunge side is yet to recover from Ashesh Das’s death and four first team players are down with jaundice. Much will depend on how the defence led by Louis Ebami performs under pressure. If Ranjan Chowdhury’s boys can steal a point from the green-and-maroon brigade, it will be as good as victory for the minnows.
Bagan vs EB clash on Oct. 9
The most awaited clash of the Calcutta Football League Premier division, between defending champions Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, will take place on October 9.
Though the league had begun on August 17, the Indian Football Association released the complete fixture of the Premier Division on Friday.
Speaking at a media conference, IFA secretary Utpal Ganguli also informed that the Mohammedan Sporting ground hasn’t got the clearance from the PWD yet and the club will have to play their initial matches at a different venue. Their first match, against Calcutta Port Trust, on Sunday, will be played at the Salt Lake Stadium.
While Mohun Bagan will play all their matches (except the exhibition ties) at their home ground, East Bengal will have to play three of their league ties (along with the exhibition matches) at the Salt Lake Stadium. The rest of the matches featuring the red and gold brigade will be played at their home ground.
Ganguli also revealed that he has sent an email to the All India Football Federation informing the apex body that IFA will be interested in hosting the league matches of the Federation Cup only if the semi-finals and the final are also allotted to the state. Meanwhile, the association is planning to host this season’s IFA Shield in February next year.
Time to answer the local call
- CFL ● Md. Sp. begin campaign today
The Calcutta Football League has been an ideal tournament for the city’s big guns to gear up for the real battle — the I-League. However, last year, thanks to the Indian Football Association’s (IFA) poor scheduling, everything went haywire and the League dragged on till May this year.
This time, the IFA has promised to complete the CFL by November 19.
And if that happens, this tournament will give enough scope to Stanley Rozario, Trevor James Morgan and Subrata Bhattacharya to tighten up the loose ends. As East Bengal coach Morgan said the other day: “The CFL is important since it will give me a fair idea about how my boys are doing.”
Well, his first test is on Tuesday but, on Sunday, Mohammedan Sporting get into action taking on Calcutta Port Trust at the Salt Lake Stadium. On Monday, it’s Chirag United, followed by East Bengal on Tuesday and defending champions Mohun Bagan on Wednesday. The Telegraph gives you an idea about the strengths and weaknesses of the top four clubs. Read on…
Subair Murithala Ali
MOHUN BAGAN
CFL title won: 29 times
2009-10: Champions
Captain: Ishfaq Ahmed
Coach: Stanley Rozario
Stars: Jose Ramirez Barreto, Subair Murithala Ali, Edeh Chidi
STRENGTHS
They have the best forward line in town. In Jose Ramirez Barreto, Subair Murithala Ali and Edeh Chidi they have strikers par excellence. Agreed age has slowed down Barreto, but still his commitment towards the game and his favourite club can’t be doubted. This season Bagan will be led by Ishfaq Ahmed, who, till the other day, was seen as someone from former coach Karim Bencharifa’s camp. This is a good sign and it shows that the club is moving forward and not getting bogged down by preconceived notions. New coach, the amiable Stanley Rozario, has become quite popular with the players. Bagan will surely fancy their chances of winning the CFL fourth year on the trot.
WEAKNESSES
The green and maroon brigade may be let down by their ageing Bengal brigade. The likes of Ashim Biswas, Jayanta Sen, ‘one-dimensional’ Snehasish Chakraborty or inconsistent Gauranga Datta may prove to be a burden in the long run. In defence, K Rahul Kumar and Oknoyo Diamondstar do not have the experience of handling the Maidan pressure. Diamondstar, an African-born Australian, who will fill up the Asian quota, looked impressive during the Siliguri camp. But how fast he adapts to the rigours of Calcutta football remains to be seen.
Denson Devadas
CHIRAG UNITED
CFL title won: None
2009-10: Runners-up
Captain: Arnab Mondal
Coach: Subrata Bhattacharya
Stars: Joshimar, Elijah Junior, Sergei Tokov, Chika Wali, Denson Devadas.
STRENGTHS
Chirag United are relatively new in the Calcutta scene and they don’t have the historical relevance of the “Big Three”. They are playing in the Premier Division since 2002-03, when they were known as the Ever-Ready Football Club, yet in a short time they have become a formidable force. Last year they almost won the CFL, pipped at the post by Mohun Bagan, and this time they have a team which can give anyone a run for their money. Elijah Junior, Joshimar, Sergei Tokov and Chika Wali are their foreign recruits. It will be interesting to see how Junior and Joshimar perform. Both are seasoned campaigners and coach Subrata Bhattacharya will be looking forward to them for the goals. The presence of Bengal’s Santosh Trophy hero Denson Devadas in the midfield is also an advantage for Chirag.
WEAKNESSES
Defence is surely a worry since except Chika Wali, who was superb for Pune FC last season, there is hardly anyone who has earned a name for himself. On the left side of the defence, Sergei Tokov is there but the three-foreigner rule may not see him much in action. If he is drafted in, it will be at the expense of either Chika or one of the two frontliners. Another weakness is obviously Bhattacharya’s volatile temperament. Last year he had his share of run-ins with the management but this time, till now, he is keeping a low profile.
Penn Orji
EAST BENGAL
CFL title won: 31 times
2009-10: Finished third
Captain: Saumik Dey
Coach: James Morgan
Stars: Penn Orji, Ekene Ekewa, Uga Okpara
STRENGTHS
The most balanced team of the CFL, East Bengal will be the favourites to lift the trophy and end their three-year drought. They have a coach in James Morgan who has an enviable resume. The man was a part of the Hull City Youth Development programme and has already impressed one and all with his coaching. East Bengal have quality foreigners in Penn Orji and Ekene Ekewa. And then, the Indian players like Sanju Pradhan, Mehtab Hossain, R Vashum and Robin Singh will also be there. Robin, in fact, has garnered a lot of hype and it remains to be seen how he does on the pitch. Morgan has already gone on record saying that the 19-year-old will be an asset for the national team within the next two years. The crucial question is: Will he live up to the expectations? Remember, what happened to PC Lalawmpuiya four years back?
WEAKNESSES
The defence remains a worry. The big-bodied Uga Okpara is there but we all saw how the red and gold defence wilted last year even in his presence. Overall they had conceded 71 goals — only nine in CFL — and this time Morgan, who must have gone through the records, will definitely be worried. Naoba Singh and Gurbinder Singh have been roped in to bolster the defence and Nirmal Chetri is already there. Fans will be hoping the defence doesn’t let in soft goals like last year.
Dipendu Biswas
MOHAMMEDAN SPORTING
CFL title won: 11 times.
2009-10: Finished fourth
Captain: David
Coach: Syed Nayeemuddin
Stars: David, Dipendu Biswas
STRENGTHS
There is hope in the Mohammedan Sporting camp and that’s their biggest strength. Syed Nayeemuddin is at the helm, making a comeback to the Maidan after a long time. Nayeem hasn’t lost any of his old habits. Two sessions of practice every day, strict discipline and those “boys are doing well” quotes to the media. They have David, the Zimbabwean defender as captain and have a Maidan veteran in Dipendu Biswas. Suraj Mondal is also there upfront.
WEAKNESSES
Hardly any player worth a name. Mohammedan Sporting will find the going tough unless and until they rope in some quality foreigners. They have lost the “Third Front” tag long time back. Now it’s a battle for survival.
Md. Sp. held by Port
Dipendu Biswas celebrates with a teammate after scoring, on Sunday. A Telegraph picture
Mohammedan Sporting’s present was held by their past.
The CFL Premier Division clash between Mohammedan Sporting and Calcutta Port Trust, at the Salt Lake Stadium, on Sunday was also a battle of brains between Syed Nayeemuddin and Shabbir Ali. And Shabbir, Mohammedan Sporting’s last season’s coach, might be smiling at the end of the 1-1 draw.
Port Trust, in fact, were the better team on the day creating more opportunities and displaying a neater game than their more fancied rivals. Nayeem’s boys will have to redouble their effort in the rest of the league if they harbour any hopes of a respectable position in the league.
After a barren first half, Port Trust drew first blood when Rajib Ekka scored from point blank range in the 73rd minute. However, veteran Dipendu Biswas found the equaliser in the 79th minute when he took advantage of a faulty clearance by the Port Trust defence.
While Mohammedan Sporting players were collectively insipid, Port Trust’s Nigerian striker Efemena Charles was impressive with his speed and power. He, in fact, missed a sitter in the dying minutes of the match. Also, his powerful shot in the 80th minute found the horizontal on its way.
In the other match of the day, BNR defeated Southern Samity by a solitary goal scored by Shyam Mondal.
Teams
Mohammedan Sporting: Priyant Singh (Manas Barua, 59 th), Zoheb Hasan, Debkumar Sashmal, David Mkandawire, Hatchibuddin Mondal, Sarip Ali Mondal, Zodinliana, Sandip Rai, Goutam Thakur, Dipendu Biswas, Suroj Mondal (Mohammed Mukhtar, 88 th)
Calcutta Port Trust: Sukdeb Ghosh, Hira Roy, Castory Mumbara, Prantosh Roy, Dipak Singh, Tanmoy Mondal (Sanju Sarkar, 65 th), Simanto Das, Rajib Ekka, Koushik Prosad, Efemena Charles, Ayan Chowdhury (Achintya Saha, 61 st)
Referee: Biplab Poddar
Meanwhile, Chirag United begin their CFL campaign on Monday when they take on Railway FC, at the Barasat Stadium. According to coach Subrata Bhattacharya, Chirag are “fit” and “ready” for the match. There are no injury worries for the team with the likes of Junior, Joshimar and Chika Wali all available for selection.
EB upbeat ahead of first match
One European failed last season; will another get success this time? The millions of East Bengal fans will hope the answer to this question is in affirmative.
And before the subjective I-League questions crop up, the objective ones of the CFL confront the red and gold brigade on Tuesday when they take on Mohammedan AC.
Englishman Trevor Morgan will hope the team fare better under his guidance than they did under Belgian Phillippe de Ridder’s last year.
Reisangmi Vashum and Penn Orji will be the midfield managers. However, with new recruit Ekene Ikenwa down with a stomach upset and Robin Singh yet to gain fitness, Morgan may have to go with Budhiram Tudu and Bikash Narjery upfront.
Speaking about his team, the former Hull City development coach said: “The boys have been training hard for the past one month and I’m happy with the progress so far. What’s most important is that they aren’t under any sort of pressure. We have to get Penn into positions from which he can do maximum damage.”
Chirag impress in opening tie
When the morning’s bright, there’s every reason to hope for a brighter day. And Chirag United, who missed the glory of annexing the Calcutta Football League crown by a whisker last year, look even better equipped to challenge the dominance of the Big Two this season.
While they didn’t exactly sparkle during their 2-0 victory over Railway FC in a CFL Premier Division tie, at the Barasat Stadium, on Monday, the promise of a better future was surely there.
If the Junior Elija-Branco Cardozo combine look sharp, beware of the edge when Joshimar gets a chance to flaunt his goal-scoring skills.
Branco, in fact, was quite enterprising on the day chasing balls and setting up passes. And he did the most important job on the field too — scored a goal. As early as in the 11th minute, Chika Wali connected well a Gouranga Biswas corner only to find his header thwarted by the crosspiece. Branco was spot on to nod in the rebound to give Chirag the lead.
The former Mohun Bagan player, who still rues “not getting enough chances” in his previous club, was instrumental in the second goal as well. Branco’s centre in the 33rd minute was misjudged by Railway FC goalkeeper Soumen Mondal. Junior, lurking nearby, cashed in on the lapse to head in a smart goal.
Chirag could have made it 3-0 in the dying minutes of the match had Jerry Zirsanga not messed up a sitter from point blank range after Junior had set him up.
For the Railwaymen, it was Palash Karmakar who impressed. While a long-ranger from Palash was perilously close to the goal, one of his free-kicks swerved sharply before Chirag ’keeper Somnath Khara could tip it over.
Teams
Chirag United: Somnath Khara, Sergey Tokov (Bapi Saha, 27th), Arnab Mondal, Chika Wali, Noushad K, Gouranga Biswas (Jerry Zirsanga, 69th), Lalkamal Bhowmick (Asif K, 58th), Nascimento Silveira, Sheikh Sabir Ali, Branco Cardozo, Junior Elija.
Railway FC: Soumen Mondal, Nilangshu Mitra, Sundar Mandi, Avijit Dutta, Swarnabha Barua, Biplab Naskar, Mrinmay Samanta (Amar Hela, 77th), Palash Karmakar, Sankha Roy Chowdhury, Tarak Nath (Mithun Dey, 68th), Sanjeeb Mishra (Subhranil Dutta, 88th.)
Referee: Ajit Dutta.
