2012 Nehru Cup: Maldives stunned Syria 2-1

Monday, August 27, 2012 Report by Rajarshi Ghosh

A stoppage time goal by Ahmed Rasheed stunned Syria as they lost to Maldives by 1-2 in the Nehru Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Monday (August 27).

The loss means two times runners-up Syria are out of the tournament as they had One Point from Three Matches.

Asfaq Ali scored the first goal in the 59’ when he headed home from close range from a Umair Mohammed floater. Syrian striker Alaa Al Shbli equalized in the 81’. However Syria’s dream of making the final for third time dashed out as Ahmed Rasheed scored the all important goal for Maldives in the stoppage time.

Maldives’ celebrations were cut short when their coach Istvan Urbanyi was shown the red card for not being able to control his emotions and kicking a water bottle.
