Friday, June 08, 2012 Report by Rajarshi Ghosh
A wonderful and a thrilling opening match were played between host Poland and 2004 Champions Greece. A 1-1 draw that included two red cards and a penalty was seen at the National Stadium in Warsaw.
In the 17’ of the match Poland took the lead through Lewandowski whose perfect power header gave the much needed joy to the home crowd. However, in the 51’, A mix-up by Szczesny and defender Marcin Wasilewski gifted Salpingidis a golden chance to level the score for Greece.
Meanwhile in the 44’ Sokratis Papastathopoulos picked up his second yellow card of the game for foul on Murawski, leaving Greece with 10 men for the remainder of the match. However, Poland received a blow as in the 69’ as Szczesny was shown a straight red after fouling Salpingidis in the box, conceding a penalty in the process. Karagounis, however, saw his spot-kick saved by substitute goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton, wasting a chance to give Greece the lead.
Greece had a goal disallowed in the 75’ and despite their best efforts were unable to score again as the game ended in a draw.
