Baljit’s two in East Bengal’s win

The Telegraph  Sunday , August 26 , 2012

Calcutta: Baljit Sahni scored a brace as Kingfisher East Bengal thrashed Kalighat MS 4-0 in a Calcutta Football League (CFL) Premier Division match, at the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday.

Edeh Chidi and Penn Orji scored once apiece as the red and gold brigade had a stroll in the park. The result, obviously, delighted coach Trevor James Morgan. He said although the win came against a small team, it will boost the team’s confidence. “We have the Federation Cup and the victories will give confidence to the players. These two victories mean that we have started the season on the right note,” said Morgan.

East Bengal started positively, dominating the proceedings and maintaining a good ball possession. While the forwards — Edeh Chidi and Baljit Sahni — showed accuracy in front of the goal, the midfielders, particularly Penn, distributed the ball with precision.

In the 14th minute, the red and gold brigade scored the opening goal. After snatching the ball on the edge of the box, Penn shot a powerful right-footer to score his first goal of the season.

East Bengal’s midfielders and strikers were already looking ominous, with numerous forays into the opponent box. But the defenders did take time to warm up to the match. Taking advantage of their sloppiness, Nigerian striker Christopher Chizobe could have equalised in the 17th minute.

After getting away from his marker, he muffed an easy chance with only rival goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to beat.

Morgan’s men doubled the lead in the 25th minute when Baljit headed home a Chidi cross from the right.

After the changeover, the script didn’t change much as East Bengal enjoyed the majority of the ball possession.
