1990s: Back on Feet Again
1990s saw the club creating a benchmark in the Indian football scenario which the other clubs can only daydream of. With a fine blend of stalwarts and a motley band of greenhorns, the club went on to win every possible tournaments in its sight. Under its mentor Mr. Paltu Das and the strict disciplinarian Mr. Nayeemuddin, the club won the triple crown in 1999 and created history for winning the Kolkata premier legue without conceding any goals.
The 90s saw the dazzling brilliance of Cheema Okerie, the Nigerian striker who became virtually unstoppable. He was to be followed by Baichung Bhutia, currently India’s biggest and most recognizable football star. It was Paltu Das’ foresight that gave Baichung the launching pad and helped him fulfill his tremendous potential. Baichung’s biggest moment of glory came when he scored a hattrick in East Bengal’s 4-1 mauling of Mohun Bagan a few years back.
The club attained a truly professional identity when United Breweries gained majority stake of the club in 1998, rechristening it to “Kingfisher East Bengal”. The name change, especially the association with an alcohol brand, affronted many of its supporters. However, it was an imperative move to keep pace with the changing times and to ensure a smooth supply of funds to keep the club going.
