East Bengal Colts Bereft of U-19 I league Again
Saturday, 25th June 2011, Report By Mainak Chakraborty
East Bengal U-19 faced JCT academy U-19 in their final match of the U-19 I league which was the title decider. The match was played at the East Bengal football club ground under overcast conditions. East Bengal colts had to win this match to conquer the title that they very badly lost last year in the penalties against Sporting Club de Goa U-19.
But hard luck and series of missed chances proved fatal for the young Red and Gold boys led by Saikat Saha Roy. The Punjab lads came for a draw which they badly needed to clinch the title as they were on a favourable goal average than the Red and Gold brigade. But Biswajit Natta, Pankaj Moula and company played one of the best matches in this league but failed to put the final nail in the coffin of JCT academy. The hosts gave their all out but lack of scoring ability and nervousness inside the opponent penalty area showed the result which was unacceptable to many supporters inside the ground. In the first half, East Bengal squandered two big chances to go in the lead. East Bengal totally controlled the play but couldn’t find that finishing touch today. JCT were constantly defending and were in their own half through the majority of the play. In the second half, JCT were defending more and more and their was a constant pressure of Red and Gold over the Punjabi boys. East Bengal played extremely well in the second half but hard luck and lack of finishing ability costed the league for the Red and Gold brigade. There could have been a penalty against JCT in the 72nd minute of the game but the referee failed to notice it much to the amaze of the spectators and everybody present inside the ground. At the end of the final whistle, both the teams were locked to a stalemate and East Bengal were bereft of their U-19 league once again in successive years.
