Rahim Nabi signs for East Bengal
Syed Rahim Nabi finally withdrew in favour of East Bengal after club officials agreed to consider his demand of a pay hike.
Sources in the club revealed that Nabi has signed only after East Bengal settled his due salary, of Rs 3 lakh, and assured him a pay hike as per his demand.
Nabi’s contract was for Rs 30 lakh last season and, if his demands are met, will take home Rs 36 lakh this season.
“The officials have promised that they would have a second look into my demands… So I decided to sign,” Nabi said at the club tent soon after signing for the club on Monday.
Incidentally, Nabi had a dispute with East Bengal officials on the payment issue last season. Nabi has a contract with the club till 2011.
“Look if you are playing well then there will be offers pouring in. Yes, I had offers from other clubs…
“Even Mohun Bagan officials contacted me several times. But then I am looking forward to be with East Bengal. I wanted to clarify a few things, which I have conveyed to the East Bengal officials,” Nabi said before signing off.

Tushar Rakhit to be Subhas’ running mate at East Bengal Club
It’s official that Tushar Rakshit will be the assistant to East Bengal coach Subhas Bhowmick this season. The former India midfielder, who signed a one-year contract with the club, will make his debut in new avatar at the team’s practice session at the club ground on Saturday.
“I’m honoured to assist Subhas Bhowmick. I’ve played under him and I know his style. Coaching is something new to me. It’s a challenge and I’m hopeful of living up to it,” Rakshit said, soon after his meeting with the coach and other senior club officials on Friday.
Bhowmick also welcomed the former player back to his ‘home’. “He has played in the big league. He’s quite dedicated to the job. I welcome him in my set-up,” Bhowmick maintained.
Rakshit may accompany the side to Myanmar for preseason friendlies there, to be played from August 14 to 24.
Rakshit retired in the 2005-2006 season after equalling Manoranjan Bhattacharya’s ‘record’ of playing as East Bengal player for 14 years in a row. The assistant coach’s post was lying vacant since Mridul Banerjee decided to join Mohun Bagan as Karim Bencherifa’s deputy.
Rakshit’s appointment came minutes after former Pune FC assistant coach Vivek Nagul’s application for the post in person. Nagul, a Uefa A-license holder who worked under former coach Stewart Hall at the Pune-based club, met Bhowmick at the club and offered his services.
The club officials, however, are now mulling options of offering him as the CEO’s job as part of a move to add professionalism to its administration following the AFC directive.
Twist to Dayoub’s tale:
Lebanese defender Ramez Dayoub’s chances of playing in the IFA Shield are in doubt following his former club Safa FC’s claim that he is still contracted to them. The latest development has already taken a toll on the defender with Lebanon delisting him from the Nehru Cup-bound squad.
Bhowmick, however, is optimistic about his availability.
“The Lebanese football setup is amateurish and so, Safa FC’s claims won’t hold water in the AFC or Fifa courts. We have already sent a letter, along with Dayoub’s own explanation, to his Fifa agent to sort out the problem with the world governing body as soon as possible. We are all hopeful that Dayoub will be cleared to play for us,” the East Bengal coach said.
